MTV Networks Free on mywaves Mobile

Last week, we covered news that MTV Networks would be launching a handful of specialized niche sites on the Verizon wireless network, expounding on its original plans to grow its audience and retain existing users with a discerned mobile strategy.

A brand like MTVN doesn't have any problems teaming up with wireless providers to offer a pretty direct connection with mobile users, but today's deal with mywaves means that all mobile users can enjoy free, ad-supported videos from MTVN, on their cell phones, for the first time. Select content from VH1, Spike, GameTrailers and other MTVN brands will be available on mywaves mobile site.

In this deal, mywaves has even worked out an ad deal with MTVN, as the two companies will be collaborating to serve ads on the mywaves platform. This should also help MTVN with its mobile advertising strategy, and gives the network some autonomy in its distribution through mywaves, which has spent the pst year or so garnering fruitful relationships with larger brands like Sports Illustrated and Nettwerk.

I'm guessing that the success of the mywaves campaign could in fact encourage MTVN and other content publishers to look to smaller mobile video neworks for promoting their work, while retaining a great deal of autonomy, and even providing wider channels for distributing ads from marketers that would like a mobile presence through their networks as well
